Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy
Craniosacral Therapy is a light-touch, manual therapy done while you are clothed on a massage table. Your practitioner will "listen" to your body through this very light touch and will likely do a few holds during the session. You will also likely be asked to "look inside" and see what you perceive in your own body and give it acknowledgement. It is difficult to say what you will experience or gain as everyone's body is different and has different priorities so it could be gradual things like better sleep and coping capabilities to more immediate responses like a migraine stopping or pain reduction. This is where the Biodynamic portion comes into it. The therapist will not go into the session with intent and will remain neutral the whole time. This gives your body a safe, reliable environment to prioritize for itself what needs to happen first. If our bodies can heal a cut or a broken bone, why do we not give it a chance with other issues? We don't trust our body's wisdom with much more than a scrape and sometimes not even a cold! Basically, any ailment is the body's inability to cope so it forms a "holding pattern" or the best it can do. Of course this can be on an extremely small scale, an exceptionally large one or somewhere in-between. These patterns form for a number of reasons and can be localized to an organ or tissue or they could be system-wide and/or span more than one system. This is why Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy can be so beneficial because it looks at the body as a whole and not the individual parts. Dr. William G Sutherland (Osteopath and founder of Cranial Osteopathy) realized this in the early 1900s when he witnessed improvements in his patients who didn't respond to drugs and/or surgery. He noticed and named movements that we never thought we had or could perceive, such as primary respiration and the movement of the sutures of the skull. He found that disruption or interference with these movements hindered the smooth workings of our bodies so he worked to re-balance these interruptions. In present day, this could translate to as "little" as our everyday schedules and commitments to as "big" as physical trauma like a fall or a car accident or emotional trauma like PTSD and depression. No matter how big or small, if our bodies interpret the threat as unsafe or it does not have the resources to neutralize, then we will hold that pattern within and some form of "dis-ease" will ensue. There are trillions of cells at any given time in the body and they are constantly regenerating, so don't think that you have a "death sentence" of chronic pain, fatigue, discomfort and the like. The body is wise and can regenerate if we acknowledge it, support it and accept it as our own. With the skilled listening, gentle, neutral (non-judging), empathic touch, the BCST practitioner creates the safety in which each system can reach its optimal health.
