What do we tell people when they have an acute injury?
Stay calm.
Then what?
Breathe.
And Finally?
Listen to your body.
Does it need further care or rest?
If this is so natural then why do we constantly go against these tendencies in other areas of our lives including chronic pain, anxiety and stress? Much of the time, we do not give our bodies the rest they need and and we simply carry on as if nothing has happened. If the body is in a heightened and/or constant state of arousal, activity or stress, then we are actively blocking our parasympathetic nervous system from working. This is what allows our body to sleep, digest, heal, repair and remove toxins. Kind of important. We rarely allow ourselves the time to recuperate and regain full awareness until it is too late and we need a stress leave, have a nervous breakdown, change careers (looking for external solutions) or go the doctor to find a quick fix because we are lacking something. I believe that Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy is integral in helping to calm the body, release its hypersensitivities and finally to allow it to breathe and rest in order to find balance on its own. Ancient Chinese and Tribal wisdom allude to the fact that the secret of man is "hidden" within.
How far we have come from that.
In addition to this (it is now, early 2022) we are collectively feeling a whole new level of dis-ease and I dare say this is worse. We have spent the last two years in various stages of concern, fear and/or defiance and like above, that is okay in the short term and we are pretty good at recognizing that and "pushing through" in the acute phase. Our state has now become chronic though and that is a trickier puzzle to piece together. We will all have different triggers. It might be that person standing too close, or the friend standing too far, it could be the person who doesn't have a mask on in the store or the person wearing one alone in the vehicle. It could be cringing at people hugging in public or someone refusing a hug to a child or it may be the lament of life's changed course or the time "lost" along the way. Whatever your trigger, it's time to recognize it in yourself and those around you and start the journey to recovery. It's scary letting go and giving your body the place in which to heal but I believe it will not come from outside, in the shape of a pill or a secret sauce. Those things can be aids, but the power is in you.
Let's watch it work.
