If this is so natural then why do we constantly go against these tendencies in other areas of our lives including chronic pain, anxiety and stress? Much of the time, we do not give our bodies the rest they need and and we simply carry on as if nothing has happened. If the body is in a heightened and/or constant state of arousal, activity or stress, then we are actively blocking our parasympathetic nervous system from working. This is what allows our body to sleep, digest, heal, repair and remove toxins. We rarely allow ourselves the time to recuperate and regain full awareness until it is too late and we need a stress leave, have a nervous breakdown, change careers (looking for external solutions) or go the doctor to find a quick fix because we are lacking something.
